Cam sites, video chat apps and dating apps all mean talking to someone through a screen, so people mix them up. They’re actually very different things, and the risks are very different too.
Who’s on the other end
On a cam site it’s a performer: an adult the platform has checked the ID and age of, who has chosen to broadcast and is paid through the site. It’s live entertainment, and both sides know where they stand.
On a video chat app (random chat services, or the video feature in a messaging app) it’s another member of the public. They could be anyone, and they might be lying about who they are.
On a dating app it’s someone who’s supposedly looking for a relationship or a date. Identity checks range from solid to almost nothing.
Your camera and your identity
| Cam site | Video chat app | Dating app | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your camera | Off unless you choose cam-to-cam | Usually on | On for video calls |
| Your name | Never shown | Often shown | First name, photos |
| Other side verified | Yes, ID-checked | Rarely | Sometimes |
| Moderation | Platform and room moderators | Minimal | Varies |
| Payment | Prepaid tokens, through the site | Free or subscription | Free or subscription |
Money
On a cam site, money is out in the open. You know what you’re paying for and who you’re paying, and all of it goes through the platform. That openness is a safety feature in its own right.
On apps, contact is usually “free”. Money comes in later, when the person you’ve been talking to asks for it: a present, a loan, an emergency. That’s exactly how a romance scam works.
The trouble with random video chat
Random video chat apps come with one particular, serious risk: sextortion. Someone talks you into appearing on camera, records it, then threatens to send the video to your contacts unless you pay. The FBI has warned about it again and again. On a reputable cam site, your camera is off unless you turn it on, and the performer has no interest in finding out who you are.
Knowing where you stand
Cam sites are entertainment, so the rules are clear. Performers set their prices and limits, everything stays on the site, and meeting up isn’t on the table. Some people find that a relief, because nobody’s pretending it’s something it isn’t.
Which one?
If you’re after company, conversation and entertainment, with clear prices and your anonymity intact, a cam site is the more predictable choice. Start with our beginner recommendations.
If you want a relationship in real life, a reputable dating service that verifies identities is the place for that. Use it carefully.
Random video chat apps are the ones we’d be most careful with.
Whatever you go for, one rule doesn’t change: don’t send money to someone you’ve only met online.
