Set your budget before you log in. At that point you’re calm, and you’re not in the middle of a lovely conversation with someone. The tools below help a limit stick. They start with the toughest and end with the simplest.

Why bother

Cam sites run on small, frequent purchases. A few tokens here, a minute of private time there. None of it feels like much on its own. Over a month, though, it often comes to more than people expect. That’s no reason to stay away. It’s a reason to set things up so the total is always a number you picked.

1. A hard ceiling

The surest limit is one you physically can’t go over.

A prepaid card is the easiest. Put your monthly budget on it, say $100, and once it’s spent, purchases get declined. Done. See gift and prepaid cards.

Or ask your card issuer to put a low limit on a separate credit card, at your monthly budget or a little above it.

Many banking apps also let you create a virtual card with a spending cap you choose.

2. Get rid of the shortcuts

Sites make buying very easy. Make it a little harder:

  • Don’t save your card on the site. Typing the number in each time gives you a moment to think.
  • Switch off one-click buying and auto-refill, which tops up your tokens automatically when you run low.
  • Hold off on memberships that renew on their own if you’re not sure about them. See hidden fees and auto-renewals.

3. The site’s own settings

Look in your account under Settings, Billing or Purchase limits. Depending on the site, you might be able to set a daily, weekly or monthly limit, require a password for every purchase, or ask support for a cooling-off period or a temporary block.

Can’t find any of that? Message support: “I’d like to set a monthly spending limit on my account. Can you help?” They get asked this all the time.

4. Your bank’s settings

Most banking apps can now send you an alert for every purchase, so nothing slips by. Many can block certain merchants or categories. And nearly all of them let you freeze a card in a second.

5. A few rules of your own

Lots of regulars swear by simple house rules:

  • One pack per visit. Buy one small pack. When it’s gone, the evening’s over.
  • Nothing after 10 pm. Late-night purchases are the least planned ones.
  • Privates have an end time. Decide how many minutes before you start.
  • First-of-the-month check. Look at what you spent last month and ask yourself if you’re happy with it.

A budget example

Monthly budget: $80. Put $80 on a prepaid card on the 1st. Buy one 100-token pack (about $11) a week and keep the other $36 for a short private show or a fan club. When the card's empty, that's it until next month.

If your spending starts to worry you

Stepping back is fine. You can ask the site to close your account (see how to cancel). You can block the sites with Screen Time on Apple devices or with content filters on others. And you can talk to someone you trust, or to a professional. The 1-800-GAMBLER helpline, run by the National Council on Problem Gambling, is free and confidential, and it can steer you toward help with compulsive spending generally.

A limit isn’t about feeling guilty. It just means there are no nasty surprises.
