What you do on a cam site stays between you and the site. What ends up on your own devices is a different matter, and that part is in your hands. These steps keep things out of your browser history, your inbox, your notifications and off any screen you share.
1. Open a private window
Every modern browser has a private mode. Once you close a private window, the browser forgets the history, cookies, searches and anything you typed into forms.
- Safari (Mac): File > New Private Window, or Shift-Command-N.
- Safari (iPad/iPhone): tap the tabs icon, then Private.
- Chrome: ⋮ > New Incognito window, or Ctrl-Shift-N (Windows) / Shift-Command-N (Mac).
- Edge: ⋯ > New InPrivate window, or Ctrl-Shift-N.
- Firefox: ☰ > New private window, or Ctrl-Shift-P.
The clearing only happens when you close the private windows, so close them all when you’re done.
What private mode doesn't do
The website still knows you were there, and so does your internet provider or your employer's network. Bookmarks and downloads made in a private window are still saved.
2. Shared computer? Give yourself your own space
If other people use the computer, private mode on its own is easy to get wrong. Forget once, open a normal tab, and it’s in the history. Better:
- Your own user account on the computer, with its own password (System Settings > Users & Groups on a Mac, Settings > Accounts on Windows).
- Your own browser profile. Chrome and Edge let you add a profile with separate history, bookmarks and passwords.
- A browser only you use.
3. A separate email address
Confirmation emails, receipts and promotions are what give most people away. Set up a free address just for cam sites and the like, and keep it out of any mail app other people can see.
4. Saved passwords and autofill
When the browser asks whether to save your password, pick Never for this site if anyone else uses the device. Autofill can also pop your cam site username up in other places. A password manager with its own master password keeps all that locked away.
5. Notifications
If a site asks “Allow notifications?”, click Block. Unsubscribe from the promotional emails in your account settings. And remember that card payment pop-ups from your bank show the billing name, so turn those off if other people see your phone. See what shows on your statement.
6. Synced devices
With an iCloud, Google or Microsoft account, your history and open tabs can sync across devices. If someone in the family shares your account, or uses one of your devices, your normal history may turn up there. Private windows don’t sync.
7. Public Wi-Fi and VPNs
On hotel, café or office networks, whoever runs the network can see which sites you visit. A VPN (virtual private network) encrypts your connection so only the VPN company can see it. Pick a well-known, paid one. Free VPNs often make their money selling your data, which rather defeats the point.
At home it’s optional. What it does there is hide the sites you visit from your internet provider.
8. Forgot? Clean up
If you visited in a normal window:
- Safari (Mac): History > Clear History, then pick the time range.
- Safari (iPad): Settings > Apps > Safari > Clear History and Website Data, or long-press the Bookmarks icon and edit your history.
- Chrome/Edge: Ctrl-H (Cmd-Y on Mac), select the entries and delete them.
