A recording passed off as a live show is one of the oldest tricks on the internet. It’s rare on the big platforms and common on the sites built to look like them. Here’s how to tell the difference in a minute or two.

Where you’ll meet recorded loops

Mostly in three places:

  • Unknown “free cam” sites that appear in ads or search results, often with names that sound like a real platform.
  • Pop-ups and ads showing a “live” performer “near you” who wants to chat.
  • Fake profiles on dating apps or social media that send you to a private “cam room”.

On established platforms such as Chaturbate, Stripchat or LiveJasmin, performers are age-verified and stream in real time. Streaming a recording as live breaks their rules and gets accounts closed.

The quick tests

Say something in chat. A real performer reads the chat, often says hello by name, and reacts to tips. If nobody ever reacts to anyone, it’s probably a recording.

Watch for repeats. Loops are often short. If the same gesture, the same hair flick or the same glance comes round every few minutes, you’re watching a loop.

Look for jumps. Sudden cuts in the video, lighting that changes all at once, or sound that doesn’t match the picture.

Check the time. Daylight streaming through a window at 2 a.m. in the performer’s stated time zone is a giveaway.

Notice what the room asks of you. A real room lets you watch and chat freely. A fake one keeps saying you need to “verify your age with a card”, “install our player” or “move to a private site” before the performer can see your messages.

What fake sites are after

The video is bait. What they want is your card number, usually for a “free” age check or trial that quietly becomes a monthly charge. Or a download that installs adware. Or your email and phone number to sell on.

If you’ve given a card to a site like this, call your bank, explain, and ask for the card to be cancelled and replaced. Watch your statement for small recurring charges with unfamiliar names. Our cam site scams guide covers what to do next.

Why the established sites are safer

Big platforms verify every performer’s age and identity, stream live through their own systems, and take payments through known billing companies, not “age verification” forms. If something’s wrong, there’s a company to complain to. Are cam sites safe? goes through what to check before signing up anywhere.

A rule of thumb

If you didn’t type the site’s address yourself, and it’s asking for a card before you’ve seen a single live reaction, close the tab. Real free-to-watch platforms let you watch and chat without a card at all. See can you watch cam sites for free?
